Five Years ago in the New England Journal of Medicine, an incredible story was revealed about a cat that could make ‘predictions’ about the death of residents in a care home a matter of hours before they passed away.
The cat in question is Oscar a feline resident at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, R.I. Oscar has had over 27 accurate predictions where residents have passed away hours after Oscar had laid down on their beds.
As soon as nursing staff began to notice Oscar’s strange capacity, they started to notify families as soon as the cat positioned himself on the bed of a resident.
The majority of families accept or even promote his presence, although Oscar becomes agitated if he is forced from the room of a dying patient.
Certainly those that have observed Oscar’s actions will testify to the fact that they appear deliberate. In the home’s unit for advanced dementia, he will meander around the rooms and corridors. He sniffs and observes a resident before taking up position beside them. He will then lie down and start purring, getting up only after a resident has passed away.
What can explain Oscar’s ability? Can it be a form of feline ESP? Animal experts have offered a variety of explanations – the most plausible being that Oscar is responding to a specific odour produced by the dying residents.
