The 2006 qualifying shows for the prestigious WINERGY? Burghley Young Event Horse Series have been announced. The 20 strong series of qualifiers culminate in a final held on Friday, 8th September at the world-famous Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (7th-10th September).
(The qualifiers are open to any horse foaled in 2001 or 2002 of a minimum height of 148cms and to riders aged 16 years or over.)
The WINERGY? Burghley Young Event Horse Series is the UK’s ‘Showcase for breeding for Eventing’. Pippa Funnell, winner in 1998 with her 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Primmore’s Pride, says that the young event horse class is ‘widely acknowledged as a shop window for breeders’.
Rider Tina Cook, who made regular British team appearances with the 1990 young horse finalist General Jock and in 2003 won the five year old championship with Miner’s Frolic, is quoted saying ‘It is a good competition for owners and breeders to aim for’.
Tamarillo, Shear H20, Cornerman, Jurassic Rising, Midnight Dazzler, Matinee, Welton Romance are just a few of the long list of equine finalists that have subsequently testified to that objective. Last year no less than seven former Young Event Horse finalists took part in the 2005 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
Since the inception of the sport of Eventing, British bred event horses have been acknowledged and rewarded as the best in the world. Literally off the back of these horses our riders, as well as many from other countries, have enjoyed success at the top of the world of eventing. Since the launch of the Young Event Horse competition 21 of the 32 winners with known breeding, have been British bred.
Jeremy Brereton, Managing Director of Effem Equine Ltd, the company behind the brands of WINERGY?, SPILLERS?, BUCKEYE? and EQUIVITE? said:
“British breeders are the foundations of the sport who will provide the team horses of the future. Excellence in breeding, nutrition and training are all essential for success. We are delighted to extend our association with the WINERGY? Burghley Young Event Horse Series and this year we will be introducing a dedicated prize in recognition of the significant achievement of breeders.”
A total of 20 WINERGY? Burghley Young Event Horse qualifiers are being held around the UK between 19th May and 18th August 2006, culminating in the finals for four and five-year-old horses at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford, Lincolnshire, on Friday 8th September 2006, the second day of the Event which runs from 7th-10th September.
